LPJ’s Guide Service is based out of Seattle, Washington, which is considered to be a mecca of Salmon and Steelhead fishing by anglers the world over.
Nearly a dozen world class Salmon & Steelhead fisheries are within a few hours drive of the large metropolitan city. Lael Paul Johnson brings anglers and photographers on several of these world class rivers such as, The Olympic National Park – Queets River, Skagit, Hoh, Humptulips, Clearwater, Satsop, Wynoochee, Skykomish, Kalama, Cascade and Stillaguamish River. These rivers feature beautiful mountain views, lush rain forests, emerald green water and the peace and serenity that you can only find on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula.
WORDS FROM YOUR GUIDE
Fishing since the age of 6 I pursued many species until I found my calling . . . the Steelhead! My passion for a better understanding of steelhead behavior pushes me to a higher level of angling that you must have for repeated success. Being a Professional Photographer and Salmon & Steelhead Guide in the Pacific Northwest allows me to capture our encounters with a photo, turning them into lasting memories.
The sport gives me a guideline to follow for every trip that I duplicate in all other aspects of life — work hard to get the desired result! To taste success you must never give up, not on an 8 mile up and down river hike in unfavorable conditions, not on an 18 mile row, or when standing in thigh high frigid glacial water waiting on “the grab”. Fighting through the tough days makes you better appreciate the double digit hook-up blue sky ones we all treasure. These days bring you peace only acquired in the wild surroundings that make up the Steelhead World and are like no other. Venturing into Washington’s lush surroundings with your mind only on an encounter is priceless. For every time the tangle begins with a true animal you have completed many things to enjoy this moment.
The more you give, the more you receive in the World of Steel, NO HANDOUTS, only hookups!
Spey fishing for large Chinook in either Washington or Alaska also brings your heart rate up when attempting to wrestle one of these giants from the river bottom. I have had the pleasure of catching many over the 30 pound mark, a handful over 40 and still in search of breaking 50. When you are locked into a fish of that size you will be coached carefully so you too may have the opportunity to accomplish the same feat. Hook ‘em good, fight ‘em hard, land ‘em fast! At LPJ’s Guide Service we target BIG FISH and in doing so have learned the best practices for getting them to cooperate.
During the months of February, March and April I strictly run catch and release steelhead trips on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula in search of “the one”. Being a National Park Service Commercial Use Authorization Permit Holder gives me access to one of the most scenic places our country has to offer as well as the biggest steelhead run in the lower 48. Several 20+ pound fish are hooked in the Queets River system each year along with some nearly topping 40 caught in tribal nets. If you have always wanted to fish where the dream fish swim, this is your river! Steelhead caught at this time of the year on my trips are caught and released ONLY, no matter if the regulations allow for retention. That is one way I do my part to assure the storied run keeps returning year after year.
